Mrs Black
My mam was born in Sussex and came to County Durham in 1912 aged two years. Grandad drove a bus from Cromer to Bishop Aukland in 1912 (the second United Bus into the North East).
The family returned to Susssex during the 1914 -1918 war. After the ws they moved back to the North East and lived in Spennymoor. On leaving school mum went to work at Kemnmire’s Furntiture manufacturers in Spennymoor. Mum was a cabinet maker. I can remember all her tools, planes, chosels, spoke shaves etc. If you wanted a door hung mum could do it; no problem.
I grew up in Verdun Terrace and cannot remember mum working outside the home. Mam was always there when I went to school and there when I came home. Something I feel is missing in modern day living.
